I have chronic insomnia?

If I go to the doctor, will they give me sleeping pills?

Will they insist on treating my mood problems or will I be able to concentrate on just helping me sleep (I'm sure my mood would be alright if only I could SLEEP)?

I haven't had a full night's sleep in months. I just want some relief.
I tried over the counter sleeping pills with diphenhydramine. They did absolutely nothing for me until, in absolute desperation, I took four times the recommended dose. I slept a few hours, then spent a few hours completely dazed and headachey and unable to move - NOT a good plan.

I don't want to rely on alcohol because, like I said, I have mood problems, and alcohol is a depressant.
I've tried hot drinks, baths, relaxing music, not exercising or eating before bed, putting lavender oil on my pillow, getting out of bed if I can't sleep, doing nothing in my bed apart from (trying to) sleep. All of these things I have been trying for months.

I saw a psychiatrist, I was diagnosed with cyclothymia, they said it was 'developing bipolar', but none of the medication or the counselling ever worked.

Insomnia causes mood problems, and I think that that's what this is. I can't sleep so my mood's all over the place.

You can probably tell that I'm kind of desperate.
When my sleep problems started, I cut out coffee. I don't drink much tea. I rarely drink coke or eat chocolate.

Me too. They put me on Cymbalta(moodiness) which is great for me. And ambien for sleep. However, some jack O$$ in a cubicle at Blue Cross and Blue shield has decided that a year of insomnia isn't considered prolonged and on-going so they won't pay for it!
